6274 Public Art have had the pleasure of working with the local traders of Portobello Main Street on a fantastic City of Edinburgh Council led Shop on the Prom project.
Our task was to come up with a creative idea that would link the high street with the promenade and involve the local business community. Our canvas to work with was a series of 14 Heras fences around a development site on the beach front.
Our idea was to work with real people and real shops in Portobello to produce a new graphic high street on the promenade. We spent a week visiting the retailers to take photos both of their shop fronts and of themselves in situ as well as a few snaps of their products and interiors. The enthusiasm and effort from everyone who took part made the project one of the most rewarding we have worked on.
The final shots were reworked, designed and printed onto nearly 50 metres of graphic mesh along the promenade in time for the Keep Scotland Beautiful Beach Award ceremony on Wednesday 30th May.
Everyone involved then received at least 5 professional photographs of themselves, their shop font and products to use in their future marketing materials both on and off line.
The feedback from the project from the local traders as well as passers by has been absolutely fantastic.

Our hope is that the graphics will encourage visitors and locals of Portobello to make the most of the fantastic high street just a few short minutes away from the “Shop on the Prom” site and perhaps pull in some extra business over the summer.
